Our eight-week stay abroad passed quickly and I arrived on the
train home in an elegant two-person cabin with Stjepán and two
bottles of Georgian red wine. The two bottles of wine did not
arrive home, we drank them on the way. It was not tannic,
which was new to me at the time. You could feel the warmth of
the Georgian sun in its soft fruity taste. I can say that I rarely
drank similar good wine in the past, even though Hungary at the
time was responsible for wine in the world of socialist
countries. But the homecoming holiday may also have
contributed to the heightened mood. Jokes about Russian power
were typical of the era. This was somewhat defensive, but on
weekdays everyone had a lot of fun, and it also served to wink
at each other. As a reminder, an example:
After I returned home from the Soviet Union, Kati and I
decided that we had to somehow get out of our tailor’s shop on
the outskirts of the city, because people go shopping in the
downtown boutiques. No matter how hard we tried, there
weren't enough buyers. What money we made was starting to
not be enough. We already had one child and knew we wanted
another. Kati also wanted to realize herself - this was a saying
that sounded good at the time. However, it was true in her case.
With the help of our architect friend, after a long search, we
managed to get all the permits to build a small two-story shop
in the courtyard of a listed historic building on Múzeum körút/
boulevard/ on place of an airshaft /lightyard.
Within a few years, a correspondence course in Russian was
announced at ELTE university, and I applied. They got in right
away. If it hadn't been for the Russian literature, I wouldn't have
finished my studies for emotional reasons. But there were good
lecturers, and I got to know in their details a literature for it was
worth attending the lectures. Thanks to the help of a colleague, I
got to the diploma, but I did not teach the Russian language.
That is, after obtaining the diploma, one of the colleagues at the
university spoke at the teachers' meeting that now fellow Biró
could start teaching Russian too. They removed me from the
